EmailOrlando, FL (October 30, 2004) - The 2nd Annual Slider Spectacular rounded up its last event on October 30th at the Orlando Watersports Complex (OWC). The event kicked off in late afternoon with the music blaring and the riders ready to tear it up. Families set up tents and had picnics all around the lake, while wakeboarders and wakeskaters soaked up the party atmosphere. Forty-five riders entered to show off their wakeboarding and wakeskating skills. This was a sliders only competition with plenty of obstacles on the water to hit. A flat bar, table top, 2 launch ramps, a big kicker, a plastic barrel, and OWC's newest addition – an 80ft long A-frame completely covered in the smoothest slider material available. The competitors ranged from ages 6 to 48 – and age had nothing to do with skill level. We had pre-teens throwing 360's, 540's, and invert tricks competing against veterans doing the same tricks. The three wakeboard divisions were beginner, intermediate/advanced, and outlaw. Wakeskate had two divisions, intermediate and advanced. Zak Stone, a pro wakeskater, tied for third place in the Wakeboard Outlaw division - proving he could mix it up. Stone took third in the final event of the Open Wakeskate division which earned him second place overall. Stone said, "The best part was being able to ride on the flat water. You get that buttery first set of the day feel - first track. The water's all still, not moving too much, and the approaches to the obstacles are epic." If you come out to OWC when they first open, you might get a chance to experience what Zak is raving about. Adam Errington and Jimmy LaRiche were both vying for the title of series champion in the Wakeboard Outlaw division. Both had first place finishes going into the final showdown. Errington managed a slim victory and was awarded the overall championship title. These guys are amazing to watch and if you think they're impressive on the cable, you should see them behind the boat. Expect to hear more about these guys in the near future. Wakeskaters were just as impressive with their shuvs, spins, and stylish grabs. John Ruark took top honors with a flawless run which included a back-to-back slide on the A-frame. Kyle Hyams, a consistent podium finisher, took second in the last event and 1st overall. One of the highlights of the day came when Adam Smith, Zak Stone, Stephen Campbell, and others attempted roof starts off the top of the operator stand. No one managed to ride off this time, but it was a great way to cap off the end of the competition. So far, the only wakeskater to land a roof start in the series is Stephen Campbell. The women proved they could also turn some heads. Barrett Perlman landed a big 360 off the camo ramp to secure a first place finish in the Women's Open division. Mad props to wakeskater, Stephanie Wamsley, for sticking a shuv-it onto the picnic table in her first pass, followed by a shuv-it off in her next pass. You could hear the crowd cheering clear across the lake. Stephanie put an ass whoopin on the guys in the Intermediate Wakeskate division. How does it feel to get spanked by a girl, fellas? But seriously though, this is one chic that rips it up! The event wrapped up in the evening with the awards ceremony. Trophies were handed out for the final stop and wakeboards, bindings, helmets, and shirts were awarded to the overall winners. Trophies were also awarded for youngest riders. Here are the results for the final stop of the Slider Spectacular Series.
Here are the overall results for the 2004 Slider Spectacular Series. The total score comes from the top 2 finishes + 2 bonus points for competing at all 3 stops.
