It has been another challenging and exciting season for the Wakeboard World Cup Skiers and Riders. Having celebrated the 26th successful World Cup Stop and final of the 2008 series in Doha, Qatar last weekend, the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF) released the overall season points scores today. MasterCraft have been the official competition boat suppliers at all 26 Stops to date.
Rising to the top in this World Cup series was the ultimate competitors test. On a journey which included Dubna in Russia, Hacienda Bay in Egypt, Marina Bay in Singapore, Putrajaya Lake in Malaysia and Doha in Qatar, this tested the skills and stamina of the elite group of athletes who qualified for entry. With an estimated 30 million participants in the world today, only the top 15 stand a chance of receiving a World Cup invitation. With an entry which included multiple world champions and world record holders, the differing climates and water conditions provided a tremendous test over the past five months for both the young rising stars and the more experienced athletes.
World Cup audiences were treated to some of the most outstanding performances seen to date at the last event in Doha. The new 15-year-old sensation Raimi Merritt (USA) recorded her second impressive World Cup podium place in the pro women division in Doha. However, as anticipated, the ex-gymnast and international wakeboard star, Dallas Friday (USA), once again took the World Cup season title. Her impressive consistency made all the difference.
In pro men, after 26 successful World Cup Stops in the series, few have been as dominant throughout as Phillip Soven (USA). His effortless performances proved once again that he is truly in a league of his own. He completed this 2008 World Cup season by taking the overall wakeboard title once again. Both Andrew Adkison (USA) and Dean Smith (AUS) also greatly impressed.
All the 2008 Wakeboard World Cup details, season scores and video clips are available on waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.

Following the highly successful World Cup Stop in Putrajaya, Malaysia, last weekend, the world's top professional waterski and wakeboard athletes are now heading for Doha on the sun-drenched coast of Qatar. The final Stop of the 2008 World Cup season will take place this Friday and Saturday, November 14th and 15th at the famous Diplomatic Club against the dramatic backdrop of palm trees, gleaming skyscrapers, hotels and the paved Corniche which circles the bay on the Gulf. It will be the 26th Stop of this global series of the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF).
Doha hosted the Asian Games in 2006 in the very impressive Aspire Dome complex which is close to the World Cup competition site. It houses over 30 arenas for a wide variety of sports with some of the most modern sporting facilities seen anywhere in the world today. Doha has also hosted the IWSF World Wakeboard Championships in 2007 and has been involved in the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series since 2004. The sponsors of this final World Cup Stop of 2008 will include Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), the Diplomatic Club, MasterCraft, who will supply all the competition boats and support services, and the IWSF.
Entry to the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series is restricted to the highest ranked athletes in the world. Considering the estimated total number of active participants in the sport of 30 million, those who qualify are certainly the best of the best today. This Doha Stop will include Wakeboard, Slalom and Shortboard / Tricks. Being the last World Cup Stop of the year means that the season champions will also be declared at the completion of this Doha Stop. The last of the Waterki Jump Stops took place three days ago in Putrajaya Malaysia. The special 2008 World Cup Crystal Awards for the season victories will be presented this Saturday in Doha.
At this last stage of the World Cup's 2008 global journey, a select group of riders have dominated all year in wakeboard. In the Pro Ladies division, Dallas Friday USA, Raimi Merritt (USA) and Shelby Kantar (USA) will all push hard to take the season titles. In the Pro Men's division, Philip Soven (USA), Nick Davies (GBR) and Andrew Adkison (USA) have also all taken podium places. It was Raimi Merritt and Nick Davies who dominated at the stop at the Palm Hills Development in Hacienda Bay, Egypt. Philip Soven and Dallas Friday dominated in Marina Bay at the world's largest floating platform in Singapore.
For the waterskiers, the top slalom scorers in Dubna in Russia and Putrajaya in Malaysia, were Clementine Lucine (FRA), Sarah Green (GBR), Jodi Fisher (GBR) and Chris Parrish (USA). Several others will not compete in Doha due to injury, etc., narrowing the season title contenders and this will further increase the level of competition. In Shortboard / Tricks, Marion Aynaud (FRA), Clementine Lucine (FRA), Jimmy Siemers (USA) and Jaret Llewellyn (CAN) will all be very strong contenders for the season title. All are capable of wining on the day. Great interest will also be focused on Nicolas LeForestier (FRA). As the World Record holder, his spectacular recover from a serious arm injury last July and his return to form in Putrajaya, tells all that he is back in contention once again. As in World Cup Stops this season in Russia, Egypt, Singapore and Malaysia, it will be no surprise if some of the very young rising stars upset the final predictions for Doha in Qatar. All divisions have seen enormous talent with those as young as 16 earning World Cup qualification to date. This very healthy development gives great confidence for the future of the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series for 2009 and beyond.
The reports and details of this 26th World Cup Stop in Doha, Qatar, can be accessed at waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.

As exotic watersport event locations go, the world's largest floating stage in Marina Bay on the Equator in downtown Singapore is about as good as its gets. The city's famous Floating Platform can hold 9,000 people and is overlooked by a Grand Stand with additional seating for 30,000.
In soaring 33C/96Fh temperatures, the World Cup wakeboard riders from 14 countries thrilled the crowds in being the last major event of Waterfest Singapore 2008. Supported by Singapore Sports Council, Tote Board and Singapore Pools, this Wakeboard World Cup weekend also included F3000 Power Boat Races, Bossaball, Boat Rides, Photography Competition and a gigantic all-night Hip Hop Party with visiting DJ's from Japan, Manila, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China.
Sanctioned by the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF) and organized by Singapore Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (SWWF), this was the 24th stop of the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series.
The IWSF World Cup wakeboard riders who qualified this year set a high standard at the previous stop in Egypt. The winners on that occasion surprised many as it was the very youngest riders who caused a major upset by outscoring the seasoned Pros. Nick Davies (GBR), aged 19, and Raimi Merrit (USA), aged 15, took the top places. Both came to Singapore with high hopes.
There were many surprises and some disappointments in the World Cup Preliminary Rounds in Singapore. Against the backdrop of the towering skyscrapers, Jeff Weatherall (NZL), six time New Zealand National Champion, and Rusty Malinoski (CAN), 2008 US Masters Champion, both failed to secure one of the final four places. In Pro Women, Elke Venken (Belgium) and the popular local star Sasha Christian (SIN) also failed to make it to the Finals.
Following the success of the Wakeboard World Cup Stop in Egypt in August, once again the very best wakeboard riders continued the battle for the World Cup season honors and the Singapore prizes of over Sing$48,000. Those four pro women and pro men who made it to the finals included almost all of the World Cup season leaders.
As the finals arrived, the afternoon heat did not deter the enthusiastic spectators. The official World Cup competition boat, the powerful MasterCraft X2, was fired up and the stage was set. Yet again, the two young winners from the Palm Hills Development World Cup Stop in Egypt, Nick Davies and Raimi Merrit, made it through and proved that their last victories were no fluke.
In the Pro Women finals, unfortunately for Denise DeHaan (NED), she sustained a knee injury and was forced to retire. Shelby Kantar (USA), with a thumb sprain, was also on the Podium in Egypt last month and her score of 44.91 was enough to keep her on the Podium again this time. The battle then was between that 15-year-old sensation Raimi Merritt (USA) and the more experienced and number one rider in the world, Dallas Friday (USA). In her effort, Merrit broke her wakeboard on the 20m/60ft flat bar obstacle in Marina Bay. Quick thinking by her father Steve, a past Barefoot Waterski World Champion, got her a replacement just within the permitted time limit, much to the delight of the spectators.
However, on this occasion, Friday was unbeatable with a perfect performance and a score of 65.0. This gave her the Singapore 2008 World Cup title. The youngster Merritt took third place behind Kantar and proved that she is well able for the best pro women in the world today.
The men's final was one of the greatest of recent times. Last month's Egypt World Cup Stop winner, 19-year-old Nick Davies (GBR) was thrilled to have made it through once again. The finals also included Jeff Weatherall (NZL), past World Champion and six time New Zealand Champion, Andrew Adkison (USA), reigning World Champion and Phillip Soven, (USA) rated as the greatest wakeboard rider of all time. This was an outstanding line-up. Again, they did not disappoint.
Young Nick Davies was first off and showing no nerves, set one of the highest scores of the day of 69.23 points. As with Raimi Merrit in pro women, he just took it in his stride. Jeff Weatherall had all kinds of problems and did not make it to the Podium. Andrew Adkison has had the most successful season of his career this year but also found it impossible to better the young Nick Davies and had to settle for third place.
Now it was the youngest finalist versus Phillip Soven, the Tiger Woods of wakeboarding. Feeling the pressure, Soven was forced to respond. This produced one of the greatest performances witnessed for many years. Soven took the Wakeboard World Cup title in some style and young Nick Davies settled for silver this time. Singapore's Waterfest 2008 had the perfect ending at Marina Bay.
The Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup Series now moves on to Putrajaya, Malaysia November 7/9 and Doha Qatar, November 13/15. For full details see waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.
All Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup Stops are featured both as TV News Edits and 26-minute TV Shows for distribution to over 500 million viewers. Video clips are also rotated through the World Cup Web site home page at the URL above.

ORLANDO, FL - A crowd of 22,000 gathered in downtown Orlando at Lake Eola to witness 24 wakeboarders innovate the sport at Red Bull Wake Lab. This groundbreaking wakeboarding competition was the U.S. debut for The Wake Park Project and Sesitec's cable system technology System 2.0. The new system and course design amazed the crowd and challenged riders to push each other to create as many unique runs which utilized all surfaces of the "wakepark."
Red Bull Wake Lab's course elements included an elevated pool, hand rails and sliders inspired by skate and snow parks. The judges reflected the hybrid wakepark course design and included freestyle snowboarder Pat Moore, Skate Park of Tampa's Ryan Clements, in addition to wakeskater Brian Grubb and wake industry veterans Shawn Perry and Chris Bischoff.
With the city skyline serving as the backdrop, Red Bull Wake Lab brought the sport of wakeboarding to the masses. "It was awesome to see so many people turn out to watch Red Bull Wake Lab," said JD Webb. "Red Bull made our ideas possible and helped innovate the sport tonight. This was by far the best event I've ever participated in."
While the wakeboarders took center stage, DJ Swamp wowed the crowd with his turntable skills and pyrotechnic display and the Red Bull Air Force skydived into Lake Eola to kickoff the event.

Following up Red Bull's impressive, and well-funded, Wake Lab event on Lake Eola Saturday night in Orlando would be a tall order for anyone. But 19-year-old pro wakeboarder Kyle Alberts and the crew from Step Up Productions took on the challenge and made history with a 50-foot ramp-to-ramp wakeboard jump over a 40-foot bus using portable pools and a high-speed, gas-powered winch.
The stunt took place right after midnight at the Wall Street Plaza complex in downtown Orlando. A jump of this caliber involving a high-speed winch is believed to be the first of its kind, and the distance Alberts cleared is record-breaking.
"It feels awesome," said Alberts. "I'm so stoked that I had this opportunity and that everything came together so well."
If the stunt itself was not intimidating enough, Alberts completed the dare devil jump twice in front of an energized crowd of more than 5,000 onlookers, including many of his pro wakeboard contemporaries and a host of industry insiders.
On his third and final run, the "2008 Pro Tour Rookie of the Year" stuck the record-breaking jump while spinning 450 degrees off axis on his wakeboard. The 450-degree spin was an unexpected surprise for the cheering crowd and when asked at what point he decided to add the 450, Alberts replied, "About halfway up the ramp!"
The entire event was conceptualized and produced by Step Up Productions, an Orlando based action sports and music production company that has been involved in major events such as the X-Games and AST Dew Tour wakeboard rail jams and the world record wakeboard jump over the Lake Eola fountain for the Discovery Channel's Stunt Junkies. Ryan Davis, president and co-founder of Step Up Productions, believes that events like the bus jump and the Red Bull Wake Lab, a wakeboard Rail Jam held at Lake Eola earlier the same night, are revolutionizing the sport of wakeboarding.
"Right now, wakeboarding is at an all-time high in terms of popularity and events like this and the Wake Lab prove that the sport is evolving," said Davis.
Saturday's stunt was the highlight of Step Up's annual after-party for the Surf Expo Trade Show. Each year Surf Expo, which is held at the Orange County Convention Center, draws over 100,000 industry manufacturers and retailers from all over the world to Central Florida. This was the fourth consecutive year that Step Up's Surf Expo after party was held at Wall Street Plaza.
The evening kicked off with the showing of a teaser for pro wakeboarder Josh Sanders' new T.V. show called Josh's Idea, which will air in 2009 on Rush HD, the only 24/7 true high definition action sports channel. Josh's Idea is a new TV series produced by Jalbert Productions that documents Sanders pursuing his crazy ideas as he travels and wakeboards around the world.
The voice of the Pro Wakeboard Tour, Dano the Mano, aka the "Noise of the North," was the event's MC and additional entertainment was provided by Grammy Award winning Producer, Rockwilder, who performed with drummer Mike Mantas. Rockwilder recently produced Boardbeats, which features "music co-produced and inspired by some of the best pros in board sports," including many professional wakeboarders such as Dallas Friday, Rusty Malinoski and Shaun Murray. Get more info at Boardbeats.com.
Kyle Alberts moved to Orlando almost three years ago to pursue the sport of wakeboarding. The wakeboarding industry has dubbed Orlando the "Mecca of Wakeboarding," and Orlando has produced some of the world's top riders in the industry, such as Alberts. Alberts attributes much of his success to his sponsors, including Hyperlite, Mastercraft, UGP clothing and Anarchy Sunglasses.
The 4th Annual Expo After Party was produced by Step Up Productions, Wall St Plaza, Hyperlite, WakeWorld.com, Boat Tree, Three Olives Vodka, Fuel Records, UGP, Double Down Entertainment and Boardbeats.

Orlando, Fla. - Epic conditions today brought about some of the most progressive cable riding ever seen at the Orlando Watersports Complex during the final day of the Byerly Toe Jam presented by O'Neill.
16 Riders in head-to-head battles competed until Nick Taylor and Reed Hansen were left in a two-man final showdown. Under azure Florida skies, Taylor threw down a crushing first run that included a barrage of big spins and an absolute mastery of OWC's rails and kickers. Taylor ended his run with a huge switch judo 180 off the O'Neill kicker, followed by a frontside bigger spin.
Not to be outdone, Hansen imitated Taylor's frontside big spin off the picnic table for his first trick (switch), then threw down a 360 shove, varial flip, frontside flip, switch toeside frontside big spin off the kicker, and just missed a 360 flip for his final trick. It was enough to put Hansen over the top in the cable finals. Reed's consistency throughout the entire tour won him the 2008 Byerly Toe Jam title, along with some spending cash and a brand new Sea Doo Wake Edition PWC.
Winners of the weekend's events were announced after the cable finals. Hansen won the rail park, boat and cable finals, making him only the second rider in Toe Jam history to ever win three of the weekend's events, Brandon Thomas having pioneered the feat. "I'd like to thank all my sponsors and everyone who helped me get here," said Hansen. "I couldn't be happier."
During Friday night's Best Trick winch jam at the Orlando Watersports Complex, 16 riders sessioned two long rails into OWC's lake all night long. Ben Horan was on top for the longest with a backside nose slide shove until the finals when Clint Tompkins knocked it out with a back lip 270 shove to take the win. Horan earned second and Reed Hansen came in third with a massive backside 180 out of the pool.
Byerly would like to thank the sponsors of the Byerly Toe Jam including presenting sponsor O'Neill, Rockstar Energy Drink, Hyperlite, Reef, Arnette, Correct Craft and Sea Doo. None of this would be possible without their support. Some Limited Byerly 210's are available. For more, go to nautiques.com.

Bithlo, Fla., - Wakeskating took another step forward today at The Projects in Bithlo, Florida as 16 of the world's best wakeskaters threw down hammer runs in head-to-head battles to determine a champion at the Byerly Toe Jam Boat Final.
Leading up to the final, some mind-blowing tricks were thrown down behind the eye-catching Byerly Limited Edition 210, and 12 of the sport's best had been knocked out, leaving Reed Hansen to battle with Nick Taylor, and Stu Shinn to take on Toe Jam boat legend Brian Grubb. By no coincidence, these are the four top competitive boat riders in the sport today, as established on the four-stop tour.
Shinn versus Hansen made for a climactic final as two of the most consistent riders contended for the title. Shinn went first and pulled a stand-up run that included a toeside 360 shove indy, a switch frontside big spin (three-for-three on the day), and a heelside late backside shove, all wake to wake. Hansen matched Shinn's late shove and front big, as well as a backside 180 both toeside and heelside. Both got a hold of their double-ups, Shinn throwing a melan grab out into the flats and Hansen attempting a heelside frontside 540 that took him down.
Results will be announced after tomorrow's cable finals at OWC. The competition was as close as it could be. OWC winch jam and cable final results to come Saturday evening.

Orlando, Fla. - In the realm of professional wakeboarding, it may only be the fourth time in history the King of Wake series has crowned a winner for the world's most elite pro wakeboarding circuit, but for the first time the king is sharing the throne with a female counterpart, the Queen of Wake.
Since its inception in 2005, the King of Wake series has made waves on the water, establishing itself as the most prestigious pro wakeboarding circuit in the world, bringing together the sport's top events into one ultimate season-long points chase. The King of Wake has proven to be so influential within the sport that in just three years after its inauguration, the mirrored female version, the Queen of Wake series, was created.
During the 2008 season, the two nine-event series each hit the water for the Air Nautique Wake Games, the Tigé Pro-Am Wakeboard Championships, the Air Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, five stops on the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour and the Rockstar Energy Drink WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra.
After six intense months of competition, the two series came to a close, dubbing the men's top points-earner, 19-year-old Phillip Soven of Longwood, Fla., the King of Wake, and crowned the women's top points-earner, 16-year-old Nicola Butler of Bournemouth, England, the Queen of Wake. As the winner of the King of Wake series, Soven claimed the $25,000 cash prize, while Butler took home the $10,000 bonus for winning the inaugural Queen of Wake series.
For Phillip Soven, the 2008 crown marked his second consecutive King of Wake title.
"It's an incredible feeling to win the King of Wake again; I never would have thought something like this was possible," said Soven. "For me, competing against some of the guys I grew up watching and admiring is an honor, but to be ranked the top rider among them is really a dream come true."
UK standout Nicola Butler will go down in history as the first rider ever to win the Queen the Wake series and proved to be a contender for future titles, as she won seven on the nine events in the inaugural series, including the first six contests of the Queen of Wake. Butler's six-contest winning-streak in the most any pro female or pro male rider has won in either series.
"All the girls stepped up their riding this year, which pushed me to be better," said Butler. "It's honor to be part of the Queen of Wake, it's the first time us girls have had something like this and I'm just stoked that I won it."
In 2009, many riders will look to dethrone the reigning King and Queen of Wake, but until next season, Soven and Butler plan on enjoying their time as royalty on the pro wakeboarding scene.

Bithlo, Fla., - Wakeskating's best hit the water today behind the Sea Doo Wake Edition for head-to-head action at The Projects in Bithlo, Florida on the first day of the Byerly Toe Jam presented by O'Neill. Perfect riding conditions and blue skies set the stage for the highest level of riding possible.
Some amazing showdowns gave the judges a hard time, but in the end it was Reed Hansen and Andrew Pastura in the head-to-head final. Just about every variation of flip trick and big spin went down, including a stomped, in-to-out 360 flip in Hansen's final run, and a backside flip in Pastura's semifinals run. Australian Chris Kallas also landed a perfect backside 540 big spin in the flats, the first ever in competition.
The results of the rail final will be announced on Saturday at OWC. Keeping with Scott Byerly's vision to showcase all aspects of the sport, riders will compete in four different disciplines: cable park (OWC), winch setup (OWC), rail park (today at The Projects) and boat (Air Nautique 210 also at The Projects tomorrow).
