How did wakeboarding get on a network dedicated to Olympic Sports? There are 3 important factors:

  • On a global level, the same relationship exists between the International Olympic Committee and the World Wakeboard Council under the International Water Ski Federation
  • In 2007, wakeboarding first appeared in the Pan American Games. Austin Hair represented the USA.

Orlando, Fla. - For the third consecutive year, the world's top pro and amateur wake athletes will team up in Orlando, Florida for the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR. Event organizer World Sports & Marketing announced today the 2009 Wake Games will be held at the Orlando Watersports Complex on April 23-26.

"The OWC has hosted some of wakeboarding's top events and we're stoked to bring the Wake Games back there for a third straight year," said Sean Dishman of World Sports & Marketing. "This event showcases the current and future stars of the sport and we could not imagine a better place to feature all this talent than the mecca of wakeboarding, Orlando."

The Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR is a unique pro-am contest that features a team-format competition. Ten preselected team captains will host a public draft to field a squad of male and female, pro and amateur riders. Riders will not only go for the win in their respective divisions, but also contribute points to a team score based on their final placement in the contest. The team with the highest overall score will take home the 2009 team title and prize money.

"It's great when you're at an event that has all these different divisions, but the Wake Games is even better because you get to pick someone from every division to be on your team and work together as a group to win," said two-time championship team captain Shaun Murray. "It's awesome to see everyone working together and pulling for each other to win. It's a lot more fun and engaging that way."

The Air Nautique Wake Games presented by ROCKSTAR is a four-day carnival of water-sports action. But not all of the action takes place on the water. On land, fans will experience great food and music, athlete autograph signings, chances to win freebies and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores offering water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.

Danny Harf Is Going Green

By Dbot5 Press Release
Published: December 21, 2008
Print    Email

Dbot5, a lifestyle company producing golf goods and accessories for the rebellious and non-conforming human, has teamed up with professional wake boarder/ innovator, Danny Harf.

For 11+ years Harf has killed it in numerous wake competitions and in September this bright and shiny rider captured the "Best Wakeboard Move" at the 2008 Wake Awards. Last season Harf landed the first 1260 in wakeboard history! Like Dbot, Harf is a forward thinker with a passion for board sports and life. This athlete is the perfect ambassador for a company supplying sick golf necessities to a whole new demographic.

Dbot works first hand with top golf suppliers of the world and now brand new products are being seen on green courses and driving ranges everywhere. Along with the edgy irons and flashy bags, an "out of the clubhouse" generation is showing up for tee times too. A younger group of life enthusiasts have leisurely picked up the century old sport. They may play it a little differently, with music blasting in their heads and tattooed forearms, but they are full of respect, passion and new ideas.

Dbot's intentions with golf are to reward athletes through another channel and bring awareness of their talents to the world. Danny Harf, Parks Bonifay and Shane Bonifay, alongside their equally hard working friends/ athletes took a sport and through sheer passion and love built it into what it is today. We got riders like Jeff House bringing in the new generation of sick shredders. This positive and intense energy is what Dbot seeks in humans. This is a lifestyle. Some people get it. Lame people don't. Have you made a tee time with Dbot5 yet?

Wakeboard World Cup
Liquid Force's Phillip Soven has won his fifth consecutive Wakeboard World Cup title in Singapore. The new venue at Marina Bay did not affect Soven as he thrilled the 7,500 crowd. This year, it was a party-like atmosphere for the Singapore leg of the Wakeboard World Cup. Conditions were not ideal, but still Soven could not be stopped as he powered his way to his fifth victory and the US$15,000 top prize. Congrats Phil. Keep it rolling!

Amber star's in Oakley's Uniquely
Liquid Force's Amber Wing star's in Oakley's brand new women's only Uniquiely action sports video. With a co-starring list that includes cover models and gold medal award winners, Amber not only holds her own against these other girls, but shines as the lone wake athlete in the video. Second place prizes of new LF board/binding setups went out to five lucky contestants as well. Thanks to everyone involved in this great promotion and congrats to Janet. Enjoy your new ride!

Billabong's OOTP
Our friends over at Billabong are hard a work on Out of the Pond. Check out the new ad of LF's Shawn Watson hyping the movie…

Halloween with the Carlsbad Lagoon
Wakesports hosted a costume wakeboard day for Southern Californians at the Carlsbad Lagoon this past month. People drove from all over to take advantage of a rare opportunity to gather with fellow wakeboarders half way through October. Customers arrived at the lagoon and were greeted by Wakesports employees and Carlsbad Lagoon coaches dressed up in some of this years most popular costumes. The riders were quickly outfitted with gear (and a costume if they weren't wearing one already) and taken out on the boat.

With the eighty-degree air temperatures and glassy water conditions, everyone's stoke was at an all time high. LF was also kind enough to fly professional wakeboarder Keith Lyman all the way out from Florida just for the event. Keith spent almost the entire day on the boat coaching and hanging out with everyone. After seeing everyone else dressed up, Keith figured it was only fitting to do his demo in costume. Lyman grabbed a Captain America suit and took to the water. I'm pretty sure that superhero demo sent the terrorists running to their caves. Keith informed the Wakesports guys that he wanted to give his personal 2009 Liquid Force pro model board to the rider with the best costume. Although the lagoon saw many wakeboarders in costume that day, there was one that stood out above the rest. At the end of the day, it was Blake Ernst's gorilla suit that won him a new signed setup fom Keith.

Liquid Force takes over FUEL TV!
It you've kept your eyes on FUEL TV over the past month, you may have mistaken it for LF TV. We have taken over FUEL TV, from The Daily Habit to The Weekly Update, team LF is taking over! We've had regular BROstock updates on The Weekly Update with a full BROstock show to come very shortly. We've got some more big TV shows planned for the near future, so stay tuned!

New Collin Ad
Head into your local shop to pick up a copy of the new Alliance Wakeboard Magazine. The new LF ad features Collin Harrington getting his groove on…

I just won the Collegiate Regionals!
Hey everyone! Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that I won the professional division at Collegiate Regionals again...not really too big of a deal, but Sacramento State came in first place over Chico, Central Washington, and Long Beach, so we have secured our spot in collegiate nationals this year! Thanks for all of the support!
- Shelby Kantar

2nd International Rio Wakeboard Contest
Returning from a trip to Mexico always is a dread because it usually means vacation is over. Well, that again was the true feeling I felt after I returned from the 2nd International Grand Rio Bravo wakeboard contest in Reynosa, Mexico. Obscura team riders Aaron Reed and Stephan Schriever were on site to judge the wakeboard contest. Phillip Soven, fellow LF Canadian Didier Godbout, and myself were there to shred our sticks in the contest.

The ranch where the contest was held was as beautiful as a homecoming queen, haha. But seriously the place was off the hook. A lot of the riders stayed in brand new on site houses in which we were the first to stay there. The LF distributor, Luis Loaiza, took extra special care of everyone that rode in the contest. The wake that the guys had supplied could have been one of the biggest I had rode behind. The riding by all the divisions was very impressive and there are some serious shredders coming out of Mexico both girls and guys! They had a "Latin Open" division and about every rider that rode in that division went off.

Alejo de Palma from Argentina took the win for that division having some technical mobes and spins in his run. As for the pro division, Rusty took home the crown followed by Randall Harris, Phillip, then myself and then a four-way tie for 5th between Didier Godbout, Gabe Lucas, Trevor Hanson and JD Webb. Overall, if anyone gets the chance to go wakeboard in Mexico, then hit up riobravowakecamp.com for an ultimate wakeboard experience. Special thanks goes out to Luis Loaiza for putting together the event and showing everybody such a great time.
- Tom Fooshee

Alliancewake.com Amber Wing Contest
Amber has teamed up with our friends over at Alliance Wakeboard Magazine to giveaway all of her gear! Head on over to alliancewake.com for your chance to win her entire setup, which includes her board (Liquid Force Amber Wing), bindings (Liquid Force Amber Wing), vest (Wing wetsuits), helmet (Pro-Tec pink) and sunglasses (Oakley). Thanks to Alliance for all of the support!

Robbie Rendo checking in from Qatar
Just a quick email to let you know Qatar was good! Raimi got 1st, Shelby got 3rd and I got 5th. It was nice to see the girls. We had so much fun. Liquid Force took over the contest! I'm riding in Philippines at the moment and this place is amazing! Talk soon!

That's all for now! Stay tuned for the next installment of The Truth, where we bring you all the happenings in the world we call LF!

World Cup Season Overall Winners Announced

By IWSF Press Release
Published: November 30, 2008
Print    Email

It has been another challenging and exciting season for the Wakeboard World Cup Skiers and Riders. Having celebrated the 26th successful World Cup Stop and final of the 2008 series in Doha, Qatar last weekend, the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF) released the overall season points scores today. MasterCraft have been the official competition boat suppliers at all 26 Stops to date.

Rising to the top in this World Cup series was the ultimate competitors test. On a journey which included Dubna in Russia, Hacienda Bay in Egypt, Marina Bay in Singapore, Putrajaya Lake in Malaysia and Doha in Qatar, this tested the skills and stamina of the elite group of athletes who qualified for entry. With an estimated 30 million participants in the world today, only the top 15 stand a chance of receiving a World Cup invitation. With an entry which included multiple world champions and world record holders, the differing climates and water conditions provided a tremendous test over the past five months for both the young rising stars and the more experienced athletes.

World Cup audiences were treated to some of the most outstanding performances seen to date at the last event in Doha. The new 15-year-old sensation Raimi Merritt (USA) recorded her second impressive World Cup podium place in the pro women division in Doha. However, as anticipated, the ex-gymnast and international wakeboard star, Dallas Friday (USA), once again took the World Cup season title. Her impressive consistency made all the difference.

In pro men, after 26 successful World Cup Stops in the series, few have been as dominant throughout as Phillip Soven (USA). His effortless performances proved once again that he is truly in a league of his own. He completed this 2008 World Cup season by taking the overall wakeboard title once again. Both Andrew Adkison (USA) and Dean Smith (AUS) also greatly impressed.

All the 2008 Wakeboard World Cup details, season scores and video clips are available on waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.

World Cup Season Winners

1. Dallas Friday (USA)
2. Raimi Merritt (USA)
3. Shelby Kantar (USA)

Wakeboard World Cup Series Heads To Doha Qatar For Final Stop

By IWSF Press Release
Published: November 16, 2008
Print    Email

Following the highly successful World Cup Stop in Putrajaya, Malaysia, last weekend, the world's top professional waterski and wakeboard athletes are now heading for Doha on the sun-drenched coast of Qatar. The final Stop of the 2008 World Cup season will take place this Friday and Saturday, November 14th and 15th at the famous Diplomatic Club against the dramatic backdrop of palm trees, gleaming skyscrapers, hotels and the paved Corniche which circles the bay on the Gulf. It will be the 26th Stop of this global series of the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF).

Doha hosted the Asian Games in 2006 in the very impressive Aspire Dome complex which is close to the World Cup competition site. It houses over 30 arenas for a wide variety of sports with some of the most modern sporting facilities seen anywhere in the world today. Doha has also hosted the IWSF World Wakeboard Championships in 2007 and has been involved in the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series since 2004. The sponsors of this final World Cup Stop of 2008 will include Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), the Diplomatic Club, MasterCraft, who will supply all the competition boats and support services, and the IWSF.

Entry to the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series is restricted to the highest ranked athletes in the world. Considering the estimated total number of active participants in the sport of 30 million, those who qualify are certainly the best of the best today. This Doha Stop will include Wakeboard, Slalom and Shortboard / Tricks. Being the last World Cup Stop of the year means that the season champions will also be declared at the completion of this Doha Stop. The last of the Waterki Jump Stops took place three days ago in Putrajaya Malaysia. The special 2008 World Cup Crystal Awards for the season victories will be presented this Saturday in Doha.

At this last stage of the World Cup's 2008 global journey, a select group of riders have dominated all year in wakeboard. In the Pro Ladies division, Dallas Friday USA, Raimi Merritt (USA) and Shelby Kantar (USA) will all push hard to take the season titles. In the Pro Men's division, Philip Soven (USA), Nick Davies (GBR) and Andrew Adkison (USA) have also all taken podium places. It was Raimi Merritt and Nick Davies who dominated at the stop at the Palm Hills Development in Hacienda Bay, Egypt. Philip Soven and Dallas Friday dominated in Marina Bay at the world's largest floating platform in Singapore.

For the waterskiers, the top slalom scorers in Dubna in Russia and Putrajaya in Malaysia, were Clementine Lucine (FRA), Sarah Green (GBR), Jodi Fisher (GBR) and Chris Parrish (USA). Several others will not compete in Doha due to injury, etc., narrowing the season title contenders and this will further increase the level of competition. In Shortboard / Tricks, Marion Aynaud (FRA), Clementine Lucine (FRA), Jimmy Siemers (USA) and Jaret Llewellyn (CAN) will all be very strong contenders for the season title. All are capable of wining on the day. Great interest will also be focused on Nicolas LeForestier (FRA). As the World Record holder, his spectacular recover from a serious arm injury last July and his return to form in Putrajaya, tells all that he is back in contention once again. As in World Cup Stops this season in Russia, Egypt, Singapore and Malaysia, it will be no surprise if some of the very young rising stars upset the final predictions for Doha in Qatar. All divisions have seen enormous talent with those as young as 16 earning World Cup qualification to date. This very healthy development gives great confidence for the future of the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series for 2009 and beyond.

The reports and details of this 26th World Cup Stop in Doha, Qatar, can be accessed at waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.

USA Riders Win Top World Cup Titles At Singapore's Marina Bay Floating Platform

By IWSF Press Release
Published: October 19, 2008

As exotic watersport event locations go, the world's largest floating stage in Marina Bay on the Equator in downtown Singapore is about as good as its gets. The city's famous Floating Platform can hold 9,000 people and is overlooked by a Grand Stand with additional seating for 30,000.

In soaring 33C/96Fh temperatures, the World Cup wakeboard riders from 14 countries thrilled the crowds in being the last major event of Waterfest Singapore 2008. Supported by Singapore Sports Council, Tote Board and Singapore Pools, this Wakeboard World Cup weekend also included F3000 Power Boat Races, Bossaball, Boat Rides, Photography Competition and a gigantic all-night Hip Hop Party with visiting DJ's from Japan, Manila, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China.

Sanctioned by the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF) and organized by Singapore Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (SWWF), this was the 24th stop of the Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup series.

The IWSF World Cup wakeboard riders who qualified this year set a high standard at the previous stop in Egypt. The winners on that occasion surprised many as it was the very youngest riders who caused a major upset by outscoring the seasoned Pros. Nick Davies (GBR), aged 19, and Raimi Merrit (USA), aged 15, took the top places. Both came to Singapore with high hopes.

There were many surprises and some disappointments in the World Cup Preliminary Rounds in Singapore. Against the backdrop of the towering skyscrapers, Jeff Weatherall (NZL), six time New Zealand National Champion, and Rusty Malinoski (CAN), 2008 US Masters Champion, both failed to secure one of the final four places. In Pro Women, Elke Venken (Belgium) and the popular local star Sasha Christian (SIN) also failed to make it to the Finals.

Following the success of the Wakeboard World Cup Stop in Egypt in August, once again the very best wakeboard riders continued the battle for the World Cup season honors and the Singapore prizes of over Sing$48,000. Those four pro women and pro men who made it to the finals included almost all of the World Cup season leaders.

As the finals arrived, the afternoon heat did not deter the enthusiastic spectators. The official World Cup competition boat, the powerful MasterCraft X2, was fired up and the stage was set. Yet again, the two young winners from the Palm Hills Development World Cup Stop in Egypt, Nick Davies and Raimi Merrit, made it through and proved that their last victories were no fluke.

In the Pro Women finals, unfortunately for Denise DeHaan (NED), she sustained a knee injury and was forced to retire. Shelby Kantar (USA), with a thumb sprain, was also on the Podium in Egypt last month and her score of 44.91 was enough to keep her on the Podium again this time. The battle then was between that 15-year-old sensation Raimi Merritt (USA) and the more experienced and number one rider in the world, Dallas Friday (USA). In her effort, Merrit broke her wakeboard on the 20m/60ft flat bar obstacle in Marina Bay. Quick thinking by her father Steve, a past Barefoot Waterski World Champion, got her a replacement just within the permitted time limit, much to the delight of the spectators.

However, on this occasion, Friday was unbeatable with a perfect performance and a score of 65.0. This gave her the Singapore 2008 World Cup title. The youngster Merritt took third place behind Kantar and proved that she is well able for the best pro women in the world today.

The men's final was one of the greatest of recent times. Last month's Egypt World Cup Stop winner, 19-year-old Nick Davies (GBR) was thrilled to have made it through once again. The finals also included Jeff Weatherall (NZL), past World Champion and six time New Zealand Champion, Andrew Adkison (USA), reigning World Champion and Phillip Soven, (USA) rated as the greatest wakeboard rider of all time. This was an outstanding line-up. Again, they did not disappoint.

Young Nick Davies was first off and showing no nerves, set one of the highest scores of the day of 69.23 points. As with Raimi Merrit in pro women, he just took it in his stride. Jeff Weatherall had all kinds of problems and did not make it to the Podium. Andrew Adkison has had the most successful season of his career this year but also found it impossible to better the young Nick Davies and had to settle for third place.

Now it was the youngest finalist versus Phillip Soven, the Tiger Woods of wakeboarding. Feeling the pressure, Soven was forced to respond. This produced one of the greatest performances witnessed for many years. Soven took the Wakeboard World Cup title in some style and young Nick Davies settled for silver this time. Singapore's Waterfest 2008 had the perfect ending at Marina Bay.

The Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup Series now moves on to Putrajaya, Malaysia November 7/9 and Doha Qatar, November 13/15. For full details see waterskiandwakeboardworldcup.com.

All Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup Stops are featured both as TV News Edits and 26-minute TV Shows for distribution to over 500 million viewers. Video clips are also rotated through the World Cup Web site home page at the URL above.
